Welcoming the Kubernetes Revolution at KubeCon 2022

Unable to attend KubeCon + CloudNativeCon this year? Here’s what you missed:

With over 8,000 attendees, more than 300 participating organizations, and 200+ sessions ranging from keynotes, breakout sessions, technical discussions, deep-dives, and more, this year’s KubeCon + CloudNativeCon was a truly exciting gathering of cloud native and open source communities.

With a majority of the sessions focused on Security, Reliability, and App Dev and Delivery, it was evident that the industry – operators and developers alike – are more than ready to move past Kubernetes adoption challenges and onto production. And, thanks to new developments and innovations on the platform, the need for production-ready container security was evident among k8s developers.

One keynote, “What We Learned Dissecting the World’s Most Popular Containers” from Ayse Kaya, a data scientist with Slim.AI, revealed that, given the ubiquity of Kubernetes use across industries, even the smallest containers contained critical vulnerabilities. According to her team’s research 60% of top public containers contain more vulnerabilities today than they did a year ago, with 88% of developers surveyed admitting that complexity was the top contributing factor to the challenge of ensuring containers are vulnerability-free.

And while Kubernetes has innate security mechanisms for applications, it’s a constant struggle for Sec and DevOps teams, as well as cloud service providers, to secure their environments. It’s no surprise, then, that numerous event sessions were panel and demo-driven, focused on use cases, tools, best practices, standards, and ultimately audits, to ensure container security.

Reducing complexity remains to be the best way to reduce risks. With large and complex applications increasingly difficult to safeguard and cloud deployments and distributed networks becoming the norm, we can safely expect teams to move towards consolidating security and development infrastructures in an effort to better secure workloads and mitigate threats in 2023.
